The Tampon Police

Ok, this is taking the fetish to absurd, Onion-esque extremes:

The Colorado Supreme Court cleared the way Tuesday for an anti-abortion group to collect signatures for a ballot measure that would define a fertilized egg as a person.

[…]

“It doesn’t outlaw abortion, it doesn’t regulate birth control,” said Kristi Burton, 20, of Colorado for Equal Rights. “It’s just a constitutional principle. We’re laying a foundation that every life deserves protection.

Burton said the initiative would simply define a human.

“It’s very clearly a single subject,” Burton said. “If it’s a human being, it’s a person, and hey, they deserve equal rights under our law.”

It’s a fucking egg, you dumb ass. As Katha Pollitt said, “[a] potential person is not a person, any more than an acorn is an oak tree.” Yeesh, how long before the Kleenex Kops begin investigating the wastebaskets of wank-happy teenage boys? 1. Heh, you know I could’t leave this one alone. ;)

Any definition of humanity that is NOT purely genetic is guarenteed to be arbitrary. In many ways, a person is only a “potential person” until well after birth – after all, a 1 year old isn’t going to survive without a caretaker any better than a 3 month old fetus. Awareness doesn’t even begin until much later than that. Development doesn’t stop until, well, hell, development NEVER stops.

ANY definition of humanity besides the pure, scientific, chromosomal definition bears the potential for abuse. At what point is a person “complete” enough to be considered human? From that vantage, how easy to argue that a mentally handicapped person is only a “potential” person and not worth protecting…

A couple of caveats should be noted – fertilization results in a complete, developing human being; unfertilized sperm or eggs are just that, sperm or eggs, so the wanking may continue, much to the relief of many (myself included  ). And more importantly, in situations where the life of a pregnant woman is in jeopordy – whether medically, or emotionally (as in the case of rape) – it is emphatically NOT the government’s job to determine which life is “more valuable,” and thus the accessibility of an abortion in those circumstances must be maintained, and the critical decision left in the hands of the lives in danger.

Compassion is for everybody; don’t discriminate on the basis of age or cell count. :P
