Stephen Harper Party Secretly Halts Detainee Transfers

by matttbastard

Well, how ’bout that–mattt speaks, Harper listens. Retroactively. Without mentioning the fact that transfers actually had ceased several months ago (and after having cast despicable aspirations on those who noted that torture was taking place on Canada’s watch).

I suppose an apology is in order.

Ok, here goes *deep breath*

I’m sorry for correctly presuming that our country really is being held hostage by a bunch of lying, willfully indifferent right-wing authoritarians. I’m sorry that our government could give a good goddamn about international law and human rights, as long as their torture-luvin’ masters down south keep handing out cookies. And I’m really sorry that the Tories reserve the right to resume transfers at any time without prior notice.

Wow. I feel purged after getting that off my chest. Uncle Steve and Co. should give it a try sometime.

Yeah, and a pony.

Impolitical nails it:

The government’s handling of this issue tells you a lot about their character. Their instinct is to deny, cover up, circle the wagons, point partisan fingers elsewhere. Then, once they’re in a pickle, reverse course only when absolutely legally necessary. Like on the eve of a court hearing.

[…]

It’s an ugly, ugly government comprised of inhuman partisans we’ve got representing us

Imperialism Is Tough!

by matttbastard

Somebody get Uncle Steve some cheese to go with his ahistorical whine:

On Afghanistan, the dominant defence and foreign policy file, Harper again looks ahead to tough choices. Rather than talking up the military mission in Kandahar as an inspiring undertaking, he used the year-end sit-down to vent frustration at slow progress in building a self-sufficient Afghan government. “You know, the United Nations and our allies will have been in Afghanistan 10 years in 2011. For God’s sakes, Germany was basically fully restored within four years; Germany joined NATO ten years after it was conquered.”

You know, that quite possibly might be the most strained, ridiculously inappropriate post-9/11 WWII analogy ever. And that’s saying a lot.

Really wish I could help the Cynical one here:

Somebody please tell me that Captain Charisma didn’t just compare World War II Germany to present-day Afghanistan.

[…]

Please tell me that my home and native land is not being governed by someone that fucking imbecilic.

Um, so, uh, what’s everyone got planned for NYE?

Mission Accomplished

by matttbastard

Via Lenin, after working so goddamn hard at re-branding our international image, we’ve finally hit the big time:

Shouts of “Death to Canada!” were heard among the clamour yesterday on the main highway west of Kandahar city, as an estimated 300 to 400 protesters voiced their anger against the violent searches of local homes.

Our little wanna-be empire, she’s growing up so fast. Well done, Steve.
