  1. We all watched the teevee that day, mattt, crying all the way, even those of us who’d been hoping for McCarthy. It was so hard to accept what was happening.

    (One ultra-sad part: some people died along the route — not the train’s fault, but that did happen.)

    I remember especially the hearse driving past the choir (not sure which one) assembled on the steps of (the Capitol? the Lincoln Memorial?) as they sang the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

    And then … we were lost for a long time.
