  1. Hey mattt, I’ve been meaning to mention to you that ever since ProgBlog was updated, there’s no longer an excertp from your blog showing up on that site, only the title. You may want to tweak whatever needs adjusting so that at least a hundred words or so of your blog appears at PB every time you have a new entry.

  2. what do you think though about the fact that all the countries with the population decline are developed countries?

    doesn’t that matter?

and this video doesn’t cover the economic problems caused by this crisis. she seems more concerned with defending a woman’s right to birth control and career over family. (which aren’t contested by “demographic winter”– the documentary is just studying the affects of the trend)

Ruby, the world human population is 6.7 billion. We’re just in no way an endangered species. Indeed, as a species, it would do both us and our environment a lot of good if we had negative population growth for quite a while.

What’s actually happening is that in countries where women have access to contraception and can be reasonably sure that all of the children they choose to bear will live to grow up, average family size goes down to just two children – a replacement population. This is a good thing, not a bad thing, any way you look at it: good because women are exercising control over how many children they choose to have, good because we’re already overburdening our environment, good because one reason why women choose to have fewer children is because child mortality levels have fallen to such an unprecedented extent.

There are no economic problems caused by this. There is no “crisis”. The only “problem” is that racists are getting in a tizzy about the possibility of white women having fewer babies.
