Acceptable Victims

Croghan27 @ Bread and Roses:

This has been an idea that has stayed in me [consistently] since hearing about this terrible act.

How many Iraqi children have been killed by the hoodlums of Blackwater, other ‘contractors’ and even some members of the regular armed forces? How many women raped, people maimed and humiliated in front of their loved ones?

Yet, when it happens to a pretty blonde white girl from Texas, with apparently connections to the Republican establishment – shit flows down from a great height, in the press, on TV and all over the internet.

The individual act is bad enough – but that it is only despicable when it happens to one of ‘us’ leaves me very uncomfortable.

Yup. 1 million+ corpses (not counting the countless others still living in the quagmire), the overwhelming vast majority completely nameless and faceless (if not non-existent, considering how controversial acknowledging the actual death toll is, to say nothing of admitting that–teh shocking!!1–‘our boys’ will actually treat the dehumanized as less than human). But touch one of ‘our’ (blonde-haired, blue eyed, no-doubt-patriotic Red State-residing) women and suddenly a GOP stalwart from TexasTexas–becomes a fervent anti-VAW crusader.

Yeah. Tell me another one; I think I’ve heard this story before. Shark-fu hit it hammer/nail stylez with her succinct-yet-stunning post ‘Black and Missing‘, which I believe can apply to any (dark-skinned) ‘other’, regardless of national affiliation:

I can’t help but wonder if decades of consuming their own product haven’t resulted in the media buying the notion that black people being the victims of crime isn’t news because black people are the acceptable victims of crime. [emph mine]

Update: More from BJ Bjornsen and Dave @ The Beav.

Update 2: A teaspoon just isn’t enough; somebody get The Queen a bucket.

  1. I have to say, they DO like black CHILDREN as victims…but only because that usually gives them the chance to point the finger at a BLACK ADULT.

By my estimation as a confirmed COURT TV junkie, the cut-off age is about 10.

  2. Sadly, there are so many who refuse to believe that these ‘boys’ are savage rapists, even when the victim is a pretty white girl from Texas. I have even read in a comment thread that her story is a Librul Conspiruhsee! She got herself a job with KBR with the intention of going to Iraq and faking a gang rape claim, to make the Right look bad. OMFG.

I’m glad Jamie Leigh has come forward, because the fact that these men, if you could call them that, need to have their sick, inhumane and unacceptable behaviour exposed, whomever they victimize.

I hope when Jamie Leigh sees Michelle Malkin outside her house digging through her garbage that she kicks her ass.

  3. So how many Iraqi children have been killed by Blackwater? Or was that a rhetorical question?
Amazed to see that you are so disparaging about the victim and seriousness of this disgraceful crime.

If you didn’t write the above, then my apologies for infering that you did. However, it is in incredibly bad taste, IMO, to say noting of being extremely patronising, and you’re still posting it on your blog, which is bad enough.

I notice though, that you didn’t answer my question about your Blackwater metrics. How many Iraqi children have they killed? Or don’t you care?

  5. I most certainly wrote that. I disagree with your (deliberate?) misinterpretation of what I wrote.

Hint: I most certainly wasn’t dismissing nor disparaging the terrible act of violence perpetuated against Ms Jones, but was rather commenting on the blatant disparity in Western (specifically US) concern when compared to the numerous atrocities that have been (and continue to be) perpetuated against Iraqi citizens and people of colour in general. In other words, not an ‘either/or’ proposition, but ‘yes, and…’

If this wasn’t immediately obvious, then perhaps you should, y’know, click the fucking links, which might help fill in the (apparent) blanks with something more useful than slander and baseless conjecture.

Also, implying that I somehow don’t care about how many children Blackwater has killed (cute) lends me to believe that you either have difficulty with basic reading comprehension (as previously mentioned), or are (as I suspect) deliberately trolling.

Since bandwidth is a valuable commodity, to say nothing of my time and patience, I don’t feel obligated to waste any more of the aforementioned by feeding you.

    Banned.
