His Silence Speaks Volumes, His Actions Much Louder

by matttbastard

Via Birth Pangs, I miss the good ol’ days when the extreme fetus fetishists were only in ascendancy south of the border:

Opposition justice critics say the swearing in next week of a former Tory MP and anti-abortion crusader is proof the federal Conservatives want to stack the courts with right-wing friends.

Lawrence O’Neil, an MP from 1984 to 1988, is to be sworn in Tuesday to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.

On April 28, 1987, the legal aid lawyer told the House of Commons: “Unborn children across this country are being suctioned from the womb by women who want to put an end to their pregnancy. Those children are being dismembered.”

The official Hansard transcripts of proceedings also quote O’Neil as saying on July 27, 1988: “It appears that there is widespread acceptance of the notion that a mother should have the right to control her body. There is no such right.”

In 1985, O’Neil moved to introduce a bill to amend the Criminal Code to require that every unborn child be represented by legal counsel at therapeutic abortion committees across the country.

[…]

Liberal MP and justice critic Marlene Jennings called O’Neil’s pending judgeship a “scary” development.

“Mr. O’Neil’s appointment by the Conservatives frightens me as a woman, and I think should frighten the overwhelming majority of women in Canada,” she said in an interview. “It’s an affront and an attack on our equality rights.”

Par. For. The. Course.

April Reign also reminds us that, ironically, October is Women’s History Month (and today is Persons Day). Apparently someone in the PMO forgot to remind Uncle Steve, since it’s nearly November and an official statement is still forthcoming. Too busy with more important matters, I suppose, like rebranding the Conservative Stephen Harper Party or crafting juvenile flame sites that target those dirty fucking hippies Stephane Dion and Liz May.

Related: Via F-email Fightback, more on the Famous Five and the 80th anniversary of the Persons Case from Shari Graydon, who highlights what by now should be common fucking sense:

When women are educated, given genuine choice around child rearing and employment, treated with respect, paid fairly and protected from violence, the entire society benefits.

We all have a vested interest in making it happen. [emph mine]

Somebody really should inform Uncle Steve of this collective “vested interest”, before his scorched earth ideological assault on equality rights and women’s advocacy irreparably undermines decades of hard goddamn work.
