Credit where credit is due: at least the Globe acknowledges the obvious similarities between the Charkaoui leak and the Maher Arar case. Once again, it appears confidential information was deliberately provided to the media by Canadian intelligence officials post-facto, apparently in order to smear a falsely accused victim of Canada’s dubious GWOT efforts. Unsurprisingly, Charkaoui denied the allegations at the time (although a likely-apocryphal anecdote involving Lyndon Johnson and pig-fucking springs to mind).
Question: if La Presse has been in possession of the document in question for ‘several months’, why wait to publish a story based on it until two weeks ago?
(Also, I really, really wish my French was better.)
