A court in the ultra-conservative kingdom of Saudi Arabia is punishing a female victim of gang rape with 200 lashes and six months in jail, a newspaper reported on Thursday.
The 19-year-old woman - whose six armed attackers have been sentenced to jail terms - was initially ordered to undergo 90 lashes for “being in the car of an unrelated male at the time of the rape”, the Arab News reported.
But in a new verdict issued after Saudi Arabia’s Higher Judicial Council ordered a retrial, the court in the eastern town of Al-Qatif more than doubled the number of lashes to 200.
A court source told the English-language Arab News that the judges had decided to punish the woman further for “her attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media”.

Absolutely disgusting culture, yet we are proclaiming this nation to be a favored ally even though it is a hard-line autocratic dictatorship/monarchy. It defies logic that we are continuing to prop up this morally bankrupt regime. Islam has a lot to learn about tolerance and people that constantly vouch for Islam with platitude such as ‘it is the religion of compassion’ would be best served if they actually lived in an Islamic country at first hand. The history of persecution in this country is abhorrent, it is fine for liberals to boycott goods made in China, but these same liberals say nothing about Saudi Arabia and Islam in general over treatment of women, apostates, and xenophobia because it is “racist”. We have the means to use other forms of energy beside oil it is time we should seriouly do this….

This story has nothing to do with Islam. It has everything to do with the Bush/Cheney regime’s very good friends in Saudi Arabia, who are perfectly capable of being depraved and corrupt all on their own, who are in fact massively rewarded for behaving this way.
Two hundred lashes could kill this young woman. And Dick Cheney, who could have an effect, is protesting … how?

Our server is toasted. Btw. So I would direct extremepress to the post I just wrote the other day that was incredibly critical of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s treatment of its women, which is actually worse in a lot of ways than it was under the Taliban. But there’s no site there at the moment. So don’t be saying that us libruls aren’t critical of Islamic regimes.

Seems of been a miscommunication here. I don’t understand what part of my comment was fallacious bigotry. Don’t want to make demons out of Arab culture but am merely pointing out the fact that their regimes that embrace Islamic doctrines tend to have the same characteristics of being unbending in their view of non-Islamic culture, suppression of women, attitude towards apostates of Islam etc…
